FAQs
Have a Question About Food Safety?
What is food safety?
Food Safety means a lot of things, primarily it means making sure the food you sell or produce is safe for human consumption.
As a food handler, you have legal and job responsibilities to ensure that you maintain food safety in the workplace. As well as following safe day-to-day practices, this means understanding:
- All policies and procedures that exist in your workplace, e.g. a food safety program;
- Food safety hazards;
- Principles for safe food handling.
Why food safety is important?
Food safety is so important because as a food provider you have a legal obligation ensure that the food you handle and produce is safe for human consumption, that is no one is going to get sick or die from the food you have produced.
The legal obligations aside, you don’t want to be known as a food provider who sells or produces sub-standard food – this is why having some form of food safety program in place is vital.
Customers rely on food staff to provide food that is safe to eat and in a clean environment. When you have some form of food safety program in place, you will be complying with food laws. These laws place a great responsibility on anyone who is handling food in a food business. They are there to ensure that food remains ‘safe and suitable for your customers to eat.
What food safety certificate do I need?
Everyone who works in a food business – including the owner – is responsible for the delivery of safe food to the customer, and as the business owner you must ensure that all staff have the skills and knowledge, they need to safely handle food in their work roles.
Some businesses will be required to have a Food Safety Supervisor (FFS) and you will need to check with the relevant authority to see if you need a FFS (generally Class 1 and most Class 2). These courses can be done on line must be through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and be a certified course.

What is food safety auditing?
Preparation is key when it comes to food safety. For most people, not knowing what to expect during an audit can make them feel powerless and lacking in self-confidence.
